Why Do Dogs Lick Us When We Pet Them. Whether we laugh at the tickling sensation or push them away because we dont want them to ingest sunscreen or that medicated gel we just applied it makes them happy because weve taken notice of them and petted or spoken to them. The main reason why they lick our hands end up being the main receptacle for their licking is because it is accessible to them. So the main reason is because its what they have more easy access to. It serves as a sort of social glue in the same ways that grooming behaviors foster relationships among many primates.
It depends on whether they have a dominant or a submissive nature. This does not necessarily mean that a dog. Our dogs could be licking us because they think its what we want them to do. This starts when dogs are puppies. Dogs that lick when petted by a human are showing subservient behaviour to that person. Possible reasons why your dog licks you when you pet it are that it is showing affection back to you it has not learned that it is not ok to lick you or that it has learned that the behavior is rewarded.
Also when our dogs kiss us we usually reward their behavior.
