Is It Bad For Dogs To Lick Wounds. Should Dogs Be Allowed to Lick Their Wounds. For wild or feral dogs licking is probably beneficial in cleaning a wound. Dogs carry so many different bacteria in their mouths that will readily transmit into your bloodstream. Whether that be desire affection or negative emotion it may be wise to understand what they are reaching for.

Even if nature is wise and you believe a dog licking himself is an instinct for him to heal himself then that means you can also say that he does it because its the only tool available for him to alleviate his discomfort or pain. Humans too have a reflex to lick or suck on any cuts. There is a common folk belief that animal saliva especially that of dogs has healing properties for human wounds. Whether that be desire affection or negative emotion it may be wise to understand what they are reaching for. I have yet to meet a dog or cat who will limit themselves to a brief and scheduled wound clean.
There is some evidence that dog saliva has some antibacterial plus the rough surface of a dogs tongue can loosen dirt which may have gotten into the wound.
